Alex screams loudly
inside the metal drawer and then starts to frantically strike out at all of the
cold surfaces leaving dents in the metal.
He then slides down towards the hatch and forcefully extends his legs
and feet onto it causing it to break off and fly across the room onto the
opposite wall. Alex slides out of the
drawer and lands crouched on the cold tiled floor. He lifts his head to look around and notices
that the place is deserted; he stands upright and then starts to search around
for clothes to which he discovers that there are none to be found. Alex moves to the door leading out into the
hallway and finds it to be locked. Alex
shouts frustrated ‘for fuck sake!’
Without effort, he punches his fist though the reinforced glass on the
top half of the door and then unlocks it from the outside. Alex runs naked through the unlocked door,
down the hall and then after checking the outer door to find that it is also
locked; kicks the door off its frame out into the street. As Alex runs through a neighbouring park, he
notices that it is winter and yet he feels no cold. He stops near an old bridge in the park and
looks at his hand and realises that it is not cut, scratched nor bruised and
also that he feels no pain at all; Alex is bemused. He sits down under the old bridge and stares
at his hands, they do not quite feel the way they used; they look like his
hands but they don’t feel like his hands.
Alex is confused and doesn’t know how he arrived at his present
location; the last thing he remembers is sitting on Susan’s bed, holding her in
his arms. His memory is sketchy when he
tries to focus on the events of the past seventy two hours with only scattered
images jumping around his mind. Alex
closes his eyes and tries to focus harder; he remembers the confrontation with
Susan’s ex-husband Peter, flashing images of the paramedics and Susan crying
over him as he lay on her floor. Alex
thinks of Susan smiling at him and suddenly he can feel his heart beating hard
against the wall of his chest, knowing that he could feel nothing beforehand. He stands up and then turns his head in the
direction of Susan’s house and whispers her name ‘Susan!’ Susan is in bed with Aimee asleep lying next
to her. Susan is looking at young Aimee
whilst petting her hair; suddenly she hears his voice and sits forward. Susan wonders whether she is losing her mind,
that maybe the grief is overwhelming her and that she craves having him back so
much that she just wants to hear his voice again. Alex is standing alone under the cold dark
bridge and as he thinks of Susan in pain, he can feel her heart beating as if
her chest is resting against his. Alex
starts to run to her and his heart starts to pump blood round his entire body fueling
his speed as he races faster and faster through the park until he reaches the
edge of the park. Susan falls back on
her bed clutching her chest as she feels the power of his strong heart beating
through hers and she falls into euphoria.
Alex finds a black Range Rover parked in a street nearby and runs over
to the driver’s door, smashing the window with his elbow, reaching inside to
open the door and then sets about tampering with the car’s electrics and
ignition until the engine roars with life.
Alex turns round to look into the back of the car and notices a navy
blue fleece lying on the back seats, he takes it and wraps it around his waist
in an attempt to cover his modesty and then ties a knot in it. Alex releases the parking brake and then
speeds off along the roads of the city towards the woman he loves. As he journeys across the city, he calls out
to Susan in his mind ‘I’m coming back to you!’
Susan starts to breathe erratically as she feels his words echoing
through her soul and the tears start to stream down her face once more. As Alex nears Susan’s home, the feelings
intensify and both Alex and Susan feel out of control. Alex turns the corner into Susan’s street and
slams on the brakes bringing the Range Rover urgently to a halt. Susan jumps out of bed, her legs suddenly feel
strong again as she runs down the stairs towards the front door, opening it
frantically and then running out into her front porch where she sees the black
Range Rover parked against the curb; it is dark inside and she cannot see who
sits within. The driver’s door opens and
Alex steps out with his bare feet onto the cold concrete, as he turns to Susan
and smiles; his heart feels as if it is breaking in two. Susan can barely speak as she covers her
mouth with her hands, the tears from her eyes running like tiny crystal streams
amongst the spaces between her fingers.
Alex breaks down, sobbing his heart out as he walks towards Susan. The pair meet on the small patch of grass in
her front garden and neither of them can believe that what they are experiencing
to be true. The rain above them begins
to fall from the sky in a powerful downpour; soaking them both as they stand
staring at each other in disbelief.
Susan slowly reaches her arms out towards Alex and places them on his
face, touching his skin to feel if he is real and Alex closes his eyes as the
very touch of Susan’s hands sends him into ecstasy. Susan choked by tears says ‘you’re
real!’ Alex trying to speak through the
emotions ‘I think so!’ Suddenly, Susan
leaps forward into his arms, her legs wrapped around him as he lifts her from
the ground, kissing her passionately on the lips, both their hands touching
each other’s bodies as they spin round on the wet grass. No matter how much rain the heavens should release,
could not wash away the love between them as death itself could not keep them
apart. Alex whilst kissing Susan’s neck
and ears whispers gently ‘I love you Susan, more than life itself!’ Susan smiling ‘And I love you Alex, please
don’t ever leave me again!’ Alex kisses
her once more on the lips and then carries her out of the rain into her home,
closing the door behind him. Inside the
house Alex and Susan sit down onto her sofa, holding each other close; not
wanting to let go. Alex runs his fingers
through Susan’s blonde locks and tells her ‘I don’t understand how this is
possible, am I right in saying that I died here with you by my side and then
suddenly, I am back here beside you, breathing, my heart alive once more?’ Susan looks serious when she says ‘I don’t
care what made this possible but I am so glad that you are here again with me………I
felt dead inside when I thought I’d lost you forever!’ Alex leans his face forward into Susan’s,
kissing her on the lips and then tells
her ‘I promise you Susan, I will never leave you again…..you are the one
who has brought me back and my sole purpose in life now is to spend my life
loving you!’ Susan starts to cry while
pulling Alex closer to her as they both lie down onto the sofa wrapped in each other’s
arms. As they both start to drift off to
sleep, Susan feels truly happy for the first time in a long time as she
comfortably rests against the heat of Alex’s body and he feels complete knowing
that tomorrow is the start of a brand new life with Susan and Aimee. That night the heavens were torn apart by the
lovers as they fought against all odds so that they could be with each other as
it was destined to be. As the rain fell
hard washing away all of their pain and suffering, cleansing their hearts and
souls, both Alex and Susan knew that life was never going to be predictable and
boring ever again and that the morning sunrise would echo an unexpected
happiness that for each of them was long overdue.
