Chapter 14 – Discovery

It is 5.32am; Susan and Alex are both fast asleep.  Alex is dreaming, causing him to wriggle and twitch in the bed.  In his mind, he sees numbers falling before his eyes...the same numbers repeating themselves over and over again.  Susan awakens to the sound of Alex mumbling and shaking the bed ‘Alex...Alex, are you ok?’  Alex quickly opens his eyes and looks at Susan ‘I was having a strange dream!’  Susan asks ‘was it a nightmare?’  Alex rubbing his hands over his face, ‘no...it was a series of numbers repeating....strange isn’t it?’  Susan looking concerned ‘what were the numbers?’  Alex looking amused ‘4, 12, 38, 46, 57, 59 and 8!’  Susan drawing a breath ‘they could be lottery numbers!’  Alex agrees, lifting a pen and notepad from the bedside locker.  Susan asks ‘what are you doing?’  Alex whilst writing says ‘just writing the numbers down, incase I forget them....you never know!’  Susan smiles, leans across the bed to kiss Alex and says ‘although I can’t get my head round what’s going on in there....I’m fascinated!’  Alex and Susan share a tender kiss and then lie back down to go to sleep.

The following morning, Alex is seated before Susan’s laptop, looking at the National Lottery website.  His mind is racing as he stares at the numbers on the screen.  Alex turns towards Susan ‘Susan....would you mind if I use your Bank Card to place a line on the lottery....I would use mine if I still had any but as you know...I’m legally dead!’  Susan giggles ‘you don’t need to explain!’  Susan reaches for her purse, removes a Bank Card and hands it to Alex.  Alex thanks her, turns back to the laptop and then places the line on tonight’s Lottery draw, using the numbers from his dream.  Alex smiles and turns back to Susan ‘If we win....it would change everything about our lives!’  Susan smiles ‘As long as it doesn’t change who we are....I’m so happy right now, I never want that to change!’  Alex looks lovingly towards Susan ‘there is no amount of money in this world that would change how I feel about you!’  Susan smiles and returns to her chores.

Later that evening; Susan, Aimee and Alex are all sitting waiting for the Lottery draw on the television.  Neither of them believe, that Alex’s dream was anything more than just a dream; but they wait and watch all the same.  Suddenly, the draw begins and the machine on the television comes to life.  Alex leans forward on the sofa as the Lottery Broadcaster begins to read out the numbers; he calls out 46.  There is a pause; then 38, followed by 4, 12, 59, 57 and the bonus ball 8.  By this stage; Susan and Alex are screaming at the television while Aimee sits puzzled by their actions.  Aimee screams ‘Mummy....what’s wrong?’  Susan hugging Alex and then Aimee ‘We’ve won the lottery, holy shit we’ve won!’  Alex is ecstatic ‘Can you believe this, Christ Almighty....yes!’  Susan screams at Alex ‘How much did we win?’  Alex in a panic ‘We’ve won 43 million, can you believe it.....oh my god!  Susan can hardly accept what is happening ‘Is it real Alex, is this all real?’  Alex smiles ‘We’re rich Susan!’

After the excitement has passed, the shock sets in with Susan experiencing a long phone call to the Lottery Company.  Susan looks shocked while the person on the other end of the telephone confirms that they are now officially rich beyond their wildest dreams.  Alex is seated in the corner watching Susan as she thanks the Lottery Company employee and hangs up the telephone.  Alex says ‘that’s it then...we’re rich!’  Susan sits down ‘where do we go from here Alex....I don’t know what to do!’  Alex smiles ‘we enjoy it Susan....we use it sensibly and make sure that all of Aimee's dreams come true....that’s what we do!’  Susan smiles back at Alex with a little tear in her eye.  Alex gets up and moves over beside Susan on the sofa, putting his arm around her ‘what’s the matter?  Susan choking back the tears ‘I’ve never had it easy you know, always counting the pennies, using shopping vouchers....everything’s always been a struggle!’  Alex comforting Susan ‘Not anymore....this is good for us!’  Susan now totally overwhelmed ‘I feel like we’ve won the lottery twice!’  Alex looking puzzled ‘How so?’  Susan leans her head onto Alex’s chest ‘you were my first lottery win; before the money came along....your love for me is worth more than all the money in the world!’  Alex and Susan embrace in a kiss before leaving the room to go to bed.  In bed, the two lovers lie in each other’s arms after making love.  Alex asks ‘are you ok?’  Susan feeling much better ‘I am now....I think having you inside me, put things into perspective!’  Susan laughs and Alex follows saying ‘well then, I’m glad I could help!’  Susan and Alex turn out the lights and slip off to sleep, dreaming of great things to come; a life without the burden of financial strain and a reality full of love and happiness.
